Childhood Obesity Prevention Program
Although I completed several projects while working at the State Health Department, my main project was to research options for childhood obesity prevention programs and to choose one to implement in Utah WIC clinics. After doing research, I decided to use the 5-2-1-0 idea from the Let's Go! program. The state WIC director mentioned that WIC participants are most interested in nutrition information given in the form of handouts to read at home. So, I used the general 5-2-1-0 idea to create my own packet of materials to give to interested parents of overweight WIC participants. To make the project feasible, I used mostly handouts that were already available for WIC staff. I compiled them into one packet. I also created a bulletin board lesson that WIC clinics could use as an option for educating WIC participants. Finally, I wrote a newsletter to explain the program.
